Tourist Information

The name Weston comes from the Anglo-Saxon term for west tun or settlement, the descriptive part of its name, "super-Mare", dates from medieval times and is Latin for over the sea.

Weston-super-Mare is a popular tourist destination, which offers attractions such as the long sandy beach, the world's largest dedicated helicopter collection at the Helicopter Museum, North Somerset Museum, the Grand Pier, the SeaQuarium and the newly opened Wheel of Weston.

The beach lies on the western edge of the town, the upper part is sandy but as the sea retreats, the tide exposes the mud flats.

The tidal range is part of the Bristol Channel, with gentle sloping mud flats, means that Weston sees high tides early mornings and late afternoons with the sea retreating far out leaving these exposed. The mud has caught many a tourist trying to reach the sea so it is unadvisable to attempt to reach the sea when it is out so far.

Weston lies close to junction 21 of the M5 motorway, from here it is just a short drive to the town centre and the beach.

The Town Council has commissioned a Town Guide packed with fascinating and useful information about our town. Copies are available at the Weston-super-Mare Tourist Information Centre and local libraries. An electronic copy can be requested from: Local Authority Publishing.
